E-Sassin - Secular Motion EP (MSXEP22)
Following on from his awesome remixes of Dom & Optical's
'Quadrant 6' and Robbie Rivera's 'Harder and Faster' (with
Dieselboy), featured on the 'Re:Born in the USA EP' (MSXEP21);
Leading US DJ/Producer E-sassin returns to Moving Shadow with
an EP of 4 new tracks. The title track 'Secular Motion' is
a filmic affair with a shifting cinematic intro, that's taken
over by submersed synth pulses and off-beat bassline rumblings.
The shifting, shaking break builds this heads down roller
with its solid rhythms and funky dance-floor vibe. Next up
is the somewhat darker and more energetic 'Abomination' which
blends distorted, snare tweaked breaks and claustrophobic
melodies, building the tension all the way until distant droning
voices signal the drop that falls away as the beats surge
back in and the track goes into overdrive. The staccato strings
and amen trickery of 'Genome (VIP)' show off E-sassin's sound
perfectly. The familiar crunching rhythms and expertly tweaked
robotic synth patches are evidence that the great US/UK production
divide no longer exists. Add to this the atmospheric tech
step 'Interface' and you have four shining examples of just
how far the US DnB scene has come.
Cujo - Killahurtz EP (MSXEP23)
Following on from his storming remix of legendary Ruffige
Cru track 'Terminator' on Metalheadz, - Tommy 'Cujo' joins
the Shadow Cru with an EP of earth-shattering tunes. Title
track, 'Killahurts' starts off with a slow building intro
that is engulfed by heavy pulsating, pounding bass rhythms
and clever synth stabs. It's then moulded together with some
solid breaks and heavily bit-crushed bass line business that,
added to the overload filters turns this into a heavy composition
that has rewind written all over it. Next up is 'Electro Rock'
- Eerie voices litter the beginning of this composition, another
HEAVY bass lead stomper. Crisp breaks fly over the saturated
and charged up low end madness that is almost certain to cause
major soundsystem melt-down. Kicking off with those terminator
style phased up beats, 'Dirty Base' morphs into a tough as
you like low frequency masterpiece with crunching breaks...
Once again it's all about the bottom end here as countless
bass fills glide in and inject the funk into the clattering
rhythms. 'Stay With Me's understated walking subs make the
bass not as prominent as in the previous tracks. Instead,
the emphasis is on the rhythm construction. The stuttering
breaks and subtle percussive licks fill the groove as Cujo
gets back to the old school with the addition of some classic
hoover business.
EZ Rollers - Title Of The Unexpected : Out-Takes & Missing
Breaks EP's (MSXEP24 & 26)
Coming up as part of the ever-popular MSXEP series is a chance
for all you Rollers fans to get your hands on some of those
'Titles of the Unexpected' album tracks that didn't make it
on to the DJ friendly DnB only LP version. Released over two
EPs these releases also include exclusive remixes of some
EZ Rollers classics that have been doing the rounds on dub
for a while now.
The first of the 2 EP's (MSXEP24) kicks off with the Rollers
new remix of 'Tough at the Top'. It originally appeared on
the CD2 live mix of 'Titles...', and has been rocking clubs
on test press for a few months. On the flip is a new remix
of album highlight 'Submission' by the rollers Intercom cohort
'Tommy Knocker'. Tommy twists the original vibe out with the
use of his infamous disco filters producing a devastating,
peshay endorsed summer breakbeat blinder. Been causing a bit
of a stir with the Fabio fraternity this one. The second 12”
starts off with an instrumental breaks remix from bassline
terrorists Koma & Bones. The lads take apart the EZ's
biggest seller 'Walk this Land' and reconstruct it as only
they know how into a pulsating breakbeat excursion. The first
of two tracks on the last side of this storming EP sees the
Legendary Doug E Fresh join the fold to rhyme over Hip Hop
joint 'You'll Never Know' with it's uplifting guitar loops
and live bass and drums. Old school Diva Sharon Brown also
features, lending her dulcet tones for the catchy as hell
chorus. And finally the Rollers flip the script once again
in the form of 'Tu Ruf', turning out a UK RnB/hip hop vibe
that just rolls & rolls with it's fat rumbling b-line
and hooky stuttering keyboard riffs. Featuring Rhallia Birch&
M.C. Bas on vocals.
The second EP (MSXEP26) kicks off with a rather tasty remix
from NZ rockers 'Concord Dawn' who take on crowd favourite
'Dust'. The original mix was pure trance inducing, sub-sonic
spine-tingling vocal mayhem so you can see why we had to get
the Concord boys involved. They stray, however, from their
trademarked sound that you would have expected and hit it
hard with an old school bass heavy vibe that just rolls and
rolls. Trust us - it rocks... E-Z cohort and terrorist Filibuster
gets his hands on seminal E-Z joint 'RS2000' on the flip as
he twists in the original vibe and smooths out THAT live bass
and adds some drifting pads to create another fine summer
filled soundscape. The second half of this EP is reserved
for some more downbeat excursions. For the first side Acoustic
Dub/Reggae star mango seed is drafted in on the tripped out,
jazzy breakbeat dub excursion that is 'Lady Jam'. Kelly Roller
and Mango go head to head in this intoxicating lyrical soundclash.
And finally, MC jakes rejoins the fold and gets to bring forth
some lyrical madness on 'Take it E-Z'; a scratch heavy, sample
looping, jazzy Hip Hop joint!
